The Athens Area Cancer Auxiliary has a 40 year history of providing service and raising funds to support cancer patients and their families right here in our community.
Members and sustainers of the Auxiliary are dedicated volunteers who commit time and energy to help further the mission of helping to eradicate cancer through education, awareness, service and fundraising. The Auxiliary meets every other month as a group while the board and committees meet monthly.
The signature service project of the Auxiliary is Road to Recovery, a cancer patient transportation program of the American Cancer Society. Auxiliary members serve as volunteers for this invaluable program by getting certified to drive through ACS and answering requests for transportation coordinated through AACA’s Road to Recovery chairperson. Members volunteer to drive when they are available taking patients to and from their treatments.
Other opportunities for service include several holiday service projects at both St. Mary’s Health Care System and Athens Regional Medical Center coordinated by the AACA Service Chair. In addition, we collect items for patients, nurses and more throughout the year, arrange for fresh flowers weekly to be present at St. Mary’s Hospice House, volunteer at both the Clarke and Oconee County Relay for Life fundraisers and the “In Their Shoes” 13 mile walk for cancer.
Annual fundraisers include Toast of the Town that is held in the fall and Swinging for a Cure golf tournament held in the spring. For more information, email athensareacancerauxiliary@gmail.com.
